|1:1||Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;|
|1:2||Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.|
|1:3||As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,|
|1:4||Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.|
|1:5||Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:|
|1:6||From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;|
|1:7||Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.|
|1:8||But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;|
|1:9||Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,|
|1:10||For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;|
|1:11||According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.|
[Introduction] This year the word “I Will Make You a Pillar of the Temple of God” has been given to us by God as His promise. If you look at Mark 24:14, we can see that God’s plan orbits around the fulfillment of redemption. Like the believers of Philadelphia church who believed that God is who speaks and accomplishes and completely obeyed His Word, I desire that all of Yewon believers to believe that God’s covenant cannot fail. I bless you in the name of our Lord that may you all become spiritual proteurs and the pillar of the temple of God, with the words of first and second Timothy, and live lives with discernment like today’s title.
1. The Life that Follows the Spiritual Flow
First Timothy is a letter from Apostle Paul to Timothy who was at the church of Ephesus for him. But when Paul left Ephesus, there was an attack from cults that shook the Ephesians’ faiths. However, as Timothy was too timid and young to carry out the ministry of Gospel, he had to go through many times of difficulties and sufferings. Apostle Paul supported and encouraged him with fatherly love. And he advised him about the problems that Timothy was experiencing. In today’s passage, Apostle Paul starts with his greeting and makes sure that Timothy has a clear spiritual identity. But in verse 1, Apostle Paul introduced himself as if Timothy did not know him. There is a special reason why he introduced himself like this. It was necessary for Timothy to have a clear spiritual identity when he is in the ministry. We can see that Apostle Paul and Timothy worked together during their whole lifetime in one spiritual flow. Going together in one spiritual flow like them is really important. Most of all, we should ride the flow of the Word. I bless you in the name of the Lord that may all of Yewon church believers ride the united spiritual flow in Christ with me, just like the relationship between Apostle Paul and Timothy and have the evidence to become a pillar in the temple of God.
2. The Sound Doctrine That Should Be Followed
In today’s passage, there are two important words. One is the different doctrine in verse three and the other is the sound doctrine in verse 10. One of the reasons that Paul made Timothy work in Ephesus was to prevent the different doctrine, the false teachings from spreading. The different doctrine is heterodidaskalein (ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖν) in Greek which means disagreeing with. In other words, it means thought of heresies, which was different from the Gospel that Jesus proclaimed and the Apostles preached. Satan attacked the church just as Paul predicted and worried. During that time, the representative ideologies that tempted the believers of the Ephesians Church were Gnosticism and legalism. In verse 4, it states that these gnosticizers were obsessed with myths and endless genealogies, and tempted the believers in the Ephesians Church. As a result, they suffered from Satan’s strategy that made people lose the essence and focus for the ministry by wasting such time. Stewardship from God is theologically the glorious plan and schedule of God. It means that God’s glorious providence is like an order of operation and plan of salvation. In verse 11, Apostle Paul emphasizes that the sound doctrine we must follow is the Gospel which is the glory of the blessed God. I bless all Yewon believers in the name of the Lord that may you receive Word training and field training and live the life of winners that deactivates any attacks of Satan.
[Conclusion] Last week, there was the conferment of degree and the spring semester for the doctorate course was started at the Remnant University in Hawaii. I led the conferment and took a class. Even though I have a doctor’s degree, I received a training for the overall spiritual flow. At that time, I received a video clip; I was so touched and shared with others. Albatrosses have the largest wingspans reaching up to 3.7 meters. It is difficult for them to flap because of the length of their wings but they can travel huge distances with the aid of wind without flapping. Likewise, if we live the life of relying on the Words of God and fully trusting God’s power, we will taste great and hidden things that we have not known. I bless you in the name of the Lord that may all Yewon believers experience God’s work and become the pillars of God’s temple like the believers of the Philadelphia church who experienced great works when they obeyed God’s Words, amidst their small ability.
