|5:1||And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.|
|5:2||At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.|
|5:3||And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.|
“Thanksgiving is the beginning of blessings”
The walk of faith exists in our daily life. It is natural for us to encounter failures and agonies. If there were only failures and pains, we would get frustrated and fall down all the time. Thus, there are time of victory, and delightful answers and blessings. Then how can we get the delightful, satisfying answers and blessings like the Israelites who conquered the Land of Promise? I hope you realize something important through today’s sermon and live a victorious life of the victors.
1. Restoration of God’s promise which made the Israelites leave
Verse 1) Before the people of Israel crossed over the waters of the Jordan, the neighboring countries fell into despair and did not have power to fight. So Israeli soldiers were in excellent spirits. But, in verse 2, “ At that time” God’s order was “stop.” And He said, “make flint knives and circumcise the son of Israel a second time.” God made an order that we cannot understand with our sense and reasoning. What the Israelites wanted was victory and conquest. However, God wanted having ‘restoration’ of ‘circumcision’ and ‘the Passover’, simply put, ‘restoration of the covenant’ before victory and conquest. The covenant of ‘circumcision’ had disappeared in severe circumstances worrying about food and drinks and having a difficult journey to walk. Nevertheless, the Israelites were the chosen children of God and the people of covenant. The word ‘Gilgal’ means ‘wheel or rolling over’ in Hebrew. This was God’s strong will that he would throw all scars, disdain, shame and pain from Egypt away since that time. The Israelites had become a new creation by having circumcision.
2. The Blessing of Settlement
The people of Israel gave their children circumcision at Gilgal and kept the Passover. God said to them that the only way to survive is to cover a doorpost and a linter the by blood a lamb. Only then the disaster will pass. This lamb indicates Jesus Christ. The only way to survive disaster is by blood. God has promised us to solve our all problems when we spread the covenant of blood of Christ. Ceasing the manna means that they never wandered, moved and roamed in hardships. Manna is the symbol of promise that God gave them as the blessing of settlement. God gave them the blessing of land. They were able to go to the Canaan by only grace of God. Like this, we all are saved from sin, curses and hell thanks to Christ. We are children of God. We have been given position, power and blessings of the background of heaven. And we should receive the blessing of being fruitful and multiplying and filling the earth and subduing it. The only way to solve the disgrace of financial problems, family problems and individual problems is living the life of evangelism.
Great achievements happening in this world cannot be made without overworking. Who are the best players in sports? They are the players who overwork in their field.
Who is the top at school? It is a student who overworks when studying. We need to overwork in terms of saving souls. Is it acceptable for you to overwork with secular things and not with Word of God, prayer and evangelism? God will grant you all of blessings if you go “all in” to the Gospel.
