|3:14||These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:|
|3:15||But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.|
|3:16||And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.|
For several weeks we have been meditating on the book of 1 Timothy which contains a lot of pastoral proverbs. I have told you that God’s absolute goal for us is to save souls, and it is given to us through duties for the past two weeks. Furthermore, what Apostle Paul is emphasizing in today’s passage is living the life of absolute devotion towards the church. Church is in the midst of God’s timetable for the salvation of souls. Constantly God is fulfilling the salvation history through the community where we, the temple of God, are gathered, not the physical church building. I want you to know that the fact you are participating in this is a great blessing and grace. I need you all to be thankful for God has allowed us to form this spiritual unity of salvation. I bless in the name of our Lord that all Yewon believers realize God’s mystery which can be found in the church, and live a life overflowing with thankfulness as the pillars of the temple of the Lord.
1. The Household of the Living God
In 1 Timothy 3:14-15, the word “the household of God” and “the church of the living God” does not indicate the structure but the unity of the believers. The reason why Apostle Paul uses the word “household” is because most of the great churches started from a house. Church in today’s passage is ekklēsia (ἐκκλησία) in Greek that means the meeting of those who are called from the world. Apostle Paul especially emphasized a word when he talked about a church. That is the household of the living God. He emphasized the household of the living God because he worried Ephesian believers might have been intimidated by those who worshipped the idols and idol temples. Basically, even though the idol temples are huge and splendid, they are useless without the Gospel. The reason we don’t have to be daunted when we proclaim the gospel is because God we believe in is the living God, not dead God. “Arise and shine, for your light has come, and the glory the Lord has risen upon you. (Isaiah 60:1)” Even though darkness covers the earth the peoples, the Lord has risen upon us. So we can be victorious. The spiritual flow will change you as the center and you can have a life of one who has victory with God’s power. I bless you in the name of the Lord that may all Yewon believers experience the living God’s work and have testimony to accomplish family evangelization with this existence as light.
2. The Pillar and Foundation of Truth
In verse 15, Apostle Paul reveals that the church is the household of God and a pillar and foundation of the truth. The Bible tells us that the truth is Jesus Christ. He also confesses the faith about Jesus Christ who becomes a pillar and foundation of Truth in verse 16. In this short verse, all ministries of Jesus Christ are included. Jesus Christ’s Incarnation, Atonement, Resurrection, and Ascension are in the confession and Apostle Paul emphasizes that this confession is the mystery of godliness. It had been hidden, but it was revealed by Jesus’ Incarnation. The word ‘Mystery’ in the verse means not like the word ‘Secret’ as generally known but it means God’s Mystery. That means God had hidden it and revealed it. Through your attention, prayer and dedication, it should be a time that all believers become a pillar for world mission. I hope you to grab hold of the fact that the church exists for the sake of world mission. I bless you in the name of the Lord that may all Yewon believers stand as the pillar of the main sanctuary construction in 2016.
[Conclusion] Among the countries colonized by other countries during World War II, our country is evaluated as the most prosperous and developed nation. Many researchers studied about it and found several reasons. The first reason is that our country is surrounded by powerful nations. Also there is a unique reason that it is the military service. Those who have finished the military service tend to compare problems with their tough military experiences. Because of this, they can manage the problems and raise productivity. Also strong passion that Korean moms have for the education for their children is the third reason. However, above all reasons that have already been mentioned, there is other factor that touched my heart; it was that churches mainly contribute to the development in South Korea. When Korean people were having a hard time, the churches consoled them, broke superstition and gave them the new prospect and hope. It is heavenly mandate, mission and calling of a church to spread the mystery of God, godliness and uniqueness. I bless you in the name of the Lord that may all of Yewon believers focus on the achievement of this mission and stand confidently as the pillar of the temple of God.
